Asher Angel Biography

Asher Angel is an American actor, singer, and dancer. He is best known for his role as Jonah Beck in the 2017 Disney Channel series Andi Mack. He has guest starred on the shows Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn.

Asher Angel Career

He made his career debut as a child actor at the age of five, in the 2008 film Jolene, starring Jessica Chastain. He went on to act in multiple plays including The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Seussical and Into the Woods at the Desert Stages Theatre in Scottsdale. He traveled to Los Angeles at age 12, where he auditioned for and won the part of Jonah Beck in the Disney Channel television series Andi Mack.

He is set to share with Zachary Levi the lead role of Billy Batson, playing his adult superhero alter-ego, in the film adaptation of DC Comics’ Shazam!. The film is set for release in April 2019 and is a further installment to the DC Extended Universe.

Luckily, we got the opportunity to ask Asher Angel some questions about his latest projects, his career thus far and what he has planned for the future!

What was your experience working on your upcoming movie SHAZAM and if you could have any super power, what would it be?

My experience working on SHAZAM was awesome! It was my first big movie and the scale was so different from anything I’ve ever done. The first day when I walked on the set, I didn’t know what I was going into. I just saw this huge crew and I didn’t know anybody, but I got to know them quickly. First, I met Jack and Zach and we’ve become very close! Zach is perfect for this part, because he’s both a kid and an adult…  Anyway, it was really cool working with all these amazing people, learning and spending time with them. This is another family that I have now, the SHAZAM fam. If I had any super power, it would have to be either invisibility or the ability to fly. I would probably choose flight, because it would be amazing to travel around the world.

Have you always wanted to be a musician or is it a passion that you realized later on? 

I’ve always really wanted to be a musician. I grew up with musical theatre and that’s really where I started and began to sing. I wanted to improve and be the best that I could be. When I was 13, I took vocal lessons and I started getting better everyday. Now, I’ve come out with my music video and singles and hopefully in the future I’ll have an album coming out. I’m just excited for everything that’s happening and all the fans are really excited. I can’t wait to show them what’s new!

What was the inspiration for the “Chemistry” music video and soundtrack?

I was doing a lot of research and I was on YouTube and thought, let’s check out some of Michael Jackson’s work. So, I watched all these different music videos from his career and him growing up basically. I went to his “Smooth Criminal” video and I asked my dad “What do you think about this?” I thought it was really cool and he ended up loving the idea of using it as inspiration, too. Then, I showed my manager and the director, Nayip and everyone thought it was an amazing idea. So, we went through with it and it was so cool and so much fun.

What are your favorite things to do when you’re not acting or singing?

My favorite things to do when I’m not acting and singing would probably be sports. I love sports, I love basketball, baseball and football. I love playing in my free time with my friends, family and dogs!

You entered into the film industry at such a young age, what was that like?

It was a little scary, because I was 5 when I did my first movie, Jolene. I was a little kid, so when I walked onto that set I didn’t know what was happening. I just saw a huge crew, cameras everywhere and when they called “action!” I just smiled and tried to look pretty!

What are your goals for the future?

I want to work as much as possible, because this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. When I am working, it makes me happy. I think it would be really cool to be up on stage and win an Oscar but even just to be nominated has always been a dream of mine. Really, I just want to keep working and learn from the people around me.

I just want to let all my fans know that they should be themselves. Be courageous, be kind, and be you.
