Bernadette Peters is an American actress, singer and children’s book author. She is famous for her roles on the Broadway stage, including in the musicals Mack and Mabel, Sunday in the Park with George, Song and Dance, Into the Woods, The Goodbye Girl, Annie Get Your Gun, Gypsy and Hello, Dolly!.

Her first performance on stage was while she was a child and as a teenage actress in the 70s in film and television. She received praises for appearances on The Muppet Show, The Carol Burnett Show and in other television work, and for her roles in films like Silent Movie, The Jerk, Pennies from Heaven and Annie. Peters then returned to the theatre In the 1980s,  and became one of the best-known Broadway stars over for the next three decades.

Peters has six solo albums to her name and several singles as well as many cast albums alongside her regular performances in her own solo concert act. She has also continued to act in films, on stage and on television in such series as Smash and Mozart in the Jungle. She has been nominated for three Emmy Awards as well three Golden Globe Awards, winning once.

Peters founded Broadway Barks with Mary Tyler Moore. Broadway Barks is an adoption event held between shows in Shubert Alley on a summer Saturday. The adopt-a-thon has grown to include potential pets from more than 25 animal shelters and adoption agencies.

Peters was born Bernadette Lazzara in a family of three and is the youngest. The family was a Silican American one and they lived in Ozone Park, Queens, New York. Her mother was Marguerite (née Maltese) while her father was Peter Lazzara, who worked as a bread delivery truck driver.

It was her mother who put Peters through show business by starting her on the television show Juvenile Jury at the age of three and a half. By the age of five, she had appeared on TV shows like Name That Tune, The Horn and Hardart Children’s Hour

She made a debut on stage, professionally, on 27th Jan, 1958, in the comedy ‘This is Goggle’. Her Broadway debut came in the play ‘Johnny No-Trump’.  In 1959, she as well featured on shows like ‘The Most Happy Fella’, The Penny Friend’ of 1966 and in 1967 ‘The Girl In The Freudian Slip’. She came into the limelight after winning the, ‘Theatre World Award’ for her role in ‘George M!’ and a ‘Drama Desk Award’ for the parody musical ‘Dames at Sea’ in her early years.

For Peters’ portrayal of Hildy in the 1971 Leonard Bernstein musical ‘On the Town’, she got her first ‘Tony Award’ nomination. Her second Tony nomination was for playing Mabel Normand in the musical 1974 ‘Mack and Mabel’. For portraying Dot/Marie, she received both the ‘Tony Award’ and ‘Drama Desk Award’ nominations.

She got to win her first ‘Tony Award’ for her lead role in the musical ‘Song And Dance’. She was the sole cast in the first act of the play. She went on to receive critical acclaim in 1987 for portraying the Witch in another Sondheim musical ‘Into The Woods and for playing Paula in the play ‘The Goodbye Girl”. Ger portrayal of Annie Oakley, the famous sharpshooter in the fictionalized musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’, brought her multiple prestigious awards.

She made her film debut in 1973 as Allison in ‘Ace Eli and Rodger of the Skies’. She resumed to play the role in ‘Silent Movie’ in 1976, and received her first ‘Golden Globe’ nomination. The same year, she earned a ‘Golden Globe’ nomination for her work on the television series ‘All’s Fair’.

Peters, who appeared on a number of television shows throughout the years, won her first ‘Emmy Award’ nomination in 1978 for her performance on ‘The Muppet Show’. She also won a ‘Golden Globe Award’ for her lead role in the movie ‘Pennies from Heaven’ in 1981.

She continued to play major roles in a number of movies and television shows in the following years, but shifted her focus back to stage plays in the early 1980s. She later received two more Emmy nominations; for her guest role in the TV series ‘Ally McBeal’ in 2001 and for her starring role in the TV movie ‘Bobbie’s Girl’ in 2003.

Her latest professional accomplishment is the publication of a best-selling children’s book, Broadway Barks, featuring beautiful mixed-media collage illustrations by Liz Murphy. It is the story of an adorable dog called Kramer based on Peters’ own pet who longs for a home and gets one at the Broadway Barks event. It is also a touching story, she has written a lovely lullaby, “Kramer’s Song,” which is packaged with the book on a CD in which the actress sings her composition and reads the text in her inimitable voice.

In a market with too many celebrity authors, Broadway Barks, dedicated to Peters’ late husband, Michael Wittenberg, stands apart both for its message and the quality of the book and lullaby, which begins, “Good night my pal, good night my friend, tomorrow I’ll see you again.”

In her illustrious career, Peters has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage and television, in her concerts and on recordings. She stars on Broadway as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the hit Broadway musical, Hello Dolly. While best known for her work in the theatre, her career as well boasts of an impressive list of television credits, which includes Mozart in the Jungle, that she won the 2016 Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy or Musical series.

She also in the new CBS All Access series, The Good Fight, a spin-off of the network’s popular series, The Good Wife as a co-star. One of Broadway’s most critically acclaimed performers, Peters has won numerous accolades including being the receiver of three Tony Awards, a Golden Globe, three Grammy nominations, three Emmy nominations and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Her “pet project” Broadway Barks, co-founded with Mary Tyler Moore, is an annual, star-studded dog and cat adoption event that benefits shelter animals throughout the New York City area. She then became a New York Times bestselling author who has penned three children’s books, Broadway Barks, Stella Is a Star and Stella and Charlie: Friends Forever. All of her proceeds from the sale of these books benefit Broadway Barks. Peters resides in New York with her rescue dogs, Charlie and Rosalia.
