Chris Bury (full name: Christopher Robert Bury) is an American Journalist and correspondent based in Chicago. He reports at Al Jazeera America’s America Tonight.

Bury is best known for being a correspondent on the Nightline program where he served as principal substitute anchor for Ted Koppel.

Bury attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale from where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He also received a Master of Arts in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

He began his career in journalism in 1975 as a reporter for WLCX-Radio in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He then joined was an instructor at Marquette University, College of Journalism from 1979-1980. Bury joined Milwaukee station WTMJ-TV serving as a political and investigative reporter. At the KTVI-TV in St. Louis, he served as co-host and reporter of the award-winning television program “EXTRA”.

He has covered the Asian economic crisis, the political battle over healthcare reform, American military policy in Somalia, gays in the military and also the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. Bury reported from Israel and the West Bank during the 2002 Middle East conflict, from South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia on the 1998 economic crisis in Asia, and from Haiti on the political turmoil in that country.

Bury reported extensively on the explosion of TWA Flight 800 and, in early 1995, on the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

He was a long-time correspondent for “Nightline,” joining the late-night news program in January 1993. From June 2002 to January 2003, he anchored “Up Close”. Bury reported and anchored “Nightline” from Afghanistan in September 2003.

He then reported from U.S. Central Command in Doha, Qatar and anchored “Nightline” from Qatar and, later Washington, D.C during the start of the Iraq war. He also reported the 2004 Democratic and Republican conventions. He then reported the impeachment and Senate trial of President Clinton, the 1996 and 1992 presidential races, the Clinton White House and Whitewater.

Bury was the correspondent for “The Clinton Years,” the multi-part series airing on ABC News’ “Nightline” and PBS’ “Frontline” in January 2001. The Clinton Years earned the Barone Award for Excellence in Journalism. He reported thoroughly on the Clinton administration for “World News Tonight,” including coverage of the 1992 Clinton campaign.
