Constance Wu Criticizes Casey Affleck’s Oscar Nomination

In the 2017 Oscar nominations, Casey Affleck was nominated in the Best Actor category for his work in Manchester by the Sea. Affleck took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture in the drama category which some people were unhappy about in light of the sexual harassment allegations that were brought against the actor in 2010. Constance Wu was one of these people who were unhappy about this and has been vocal about the allegations against Affleck, previously tweeting a link to a Mashable article questioning why the allegations against Affleck were not being spoken about.

After the Oscar nominations announcement, Wu spoke out on Twitter against Affleck’s nomination with a series of sarcastic tweets. She explained her reaction to Affleck’s nomination by saying that he is “running for an award that honors a craft whose purpose is examining the dignity of the human experience, and young women are deeply human.” Wu concluded by saying that although she has been told not to speak about this “for career’s sake,” she did it because she’s “a woman and human first.”

Constance Wu Slams Matt Damon’s “Great Wall” Film for Perpetuating a ‘Racist Myth’

She doesn’t mince words when she says that Hollywood needs to step up and do better. She told Vulture something similar about executives who say that they “try,” when she said, “Boo fucking hoo, a lot of shit is hard. Care more, make it matter.” Wu isn’t about to let Hollywood executives off the hook rather, it’s about pointing out the repeatedly implied racist notion that white people are superior to POC and that POC needs salvation from their own color via white strength.

Wu tweeted an update stating that it wasn’t about “blame,” but rather “awareness”. While her mentions are undoubtedly filled with landmines, celebrities have tweeted their support for Wu, including Shonda Rhimes, Daniel Dae Kim, and Kerry Washington
