David Rubenstein Biography
David Rubenstein is an American investor and philanthropist. He was born on 11th August 1949. He is popularly known for his famous TV show The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations on Bloomberg. Mr . Rubenstein is one among the three founders of private equity firm Carlyle Group, which he is the current executive co-chairman.
The Carlyle Group which is based in Washington D.C is one of the biggest and world’s most successful investment firms of our time. Rubenstein co-founded the firm in the year 1987. And ever since he joined the firm, the Carlyle group has grown to manage investment worth $216 billion with 31 offices around the globe.
He is also the current chairperson of the Boards of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the performing Arts,the President of The Economic Club of Washington D.C. Chairman of the Smithsonian Institution, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Rubenstein bought his house in 1985 in Bethesda. The house sits on a 7,600 square feet piece of land. It has an additional 2,000 square- foot basement and he also owns a 4,300 square-foot guest house just next door.
David Rubenstein Career
Mr. Rubenstein practiced law in New York in the year 1973-75. From there he was employed as the chief counsel to the U.S.A Senate judiciary committee’s subcommittee on constitutional amendments. Mr. Rubenstein then became the Deputy assistant for domestic policy to the former president, Mr. Carter. This was in the year 1977-1981.
He then exited White House and proceeded to practice law in Washington D.C with Shaw, Pittman among others.
Rubenstein often joked about how he always talked about changing career to politics and non of his colleagues or clients ever told him not to leave. So he took it that he was probably not a good lawyer.
Armed with a law degree and experience in politics he left to start his own company. This was the birth of the now famous Carlyle Group. Its name is derived from the hotel the founding partners used to meet.
Mr. Rubenstein initially thought of gathering a team of investment professionals who are interested in launching a private equity company and who would then employ him as a legal consultant. This however did not happen.

Rubenstein and four other partners formed the Carlyle Group in 1987. The firm was to be based in Washington. This was because the initial idea was to acquire businesses that are largely influenced by the government. The partners were able to raise $5 million as start-up capital. $3 million of this amount was to go to real investment and the remaining $2 million was set a side for operating expenses.
up to 1990 the group mainly raised funds on a deal-by- deal basis. The firm’s first buyout money was raised by investors to a tune of $100 million. This funds were used to acquire several businesses.
As of today the Carlyle Group has grown to a global status. It now boasts of over $200 billion of assets across 343 investments platforms. The Carlyle Group has over 1,950 professional investors in over 90 countries in the world.

The David Rubenstein Atrium, which was originally called the Harmony Atrium, is among the many Privately Owned Public Spaces. The Atrium is located in the vibrant city of New York. It was created under a program that gives zoning incentives for buildings so as to make them accessible public spaces. This building was created with an original vision of creating a lively gathering space suitable for both local residents and visitors. It provides several amenities among them, a state-of-the-art illumination, media wall that has performance information for video performance and an art installation. The Atrium is also the first LEED certified, ”green” buildings that are on the Lincoln Center.

Rubenstein is one of the first forty people who have pledged to give more than half of there general wealth to charity causes. this is part of The Giving Pledge. Mr. Rubenstein has also donated large gifts to several universities in th U.S this include Duke University, Harvard University and the University of Chicago among others.
In 2007 he purshased the copy of the Magna Carter in New York. He later lent it to the National Archives in Washington, D.C for public access.
