Jayson Werth (full name: Jayson Richard Gowan Werth), is an American former professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is from Springfield, Illinois. He threw and batted with his right hand. He primarily played as a right fielder in his career but also played left field for the Nationals.

Werth has played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals before retiring in June 2018.

Jayson was born in a family of three to Jeff Gowan and Kim Schofield Werth. His father was a collegiate baseball and football player and his mother competed in the trials of U.S Olympic in the field event of long jump.

He is the grandson of Ducky Schofield and nephew of Dick Schofield, both Major League Baseball infielders, and stepson of Dennis Werth, who played in parts of four seasons with the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees from 1979 through 1982. He has two siblings, both sisters: Hannah Werth and Hillary Werth.

Werth is married to Julia Werth who was born Julia C. Parr on January 10, 1978. The couple tied the knot in January 2000 and they have two children ever since. She is a graduate of Chatham Glenwood High School (1999).

Werth successfully played for the top youth traveling teams in Springfield, Illinois as a youngster. His teams dominated the state of Illinois youth baseball with four consecutive state championships in Khoury League with the Bunn Brewers. He then played for the Springfield Flame, a national power, where his team won the state and Midwest Regional as well as finished third in the 1993 Sandy Koufax World Series in Spring, Texas, behind Pico Rivera, California and a Dallas, Texas, team.

In 1995, Werth was chosen to play for the U.S. Junior Pan Am Games. While attending Glenwood High School in Chatham, Illinois, where he compiled a .616 batting average in his senior year with 15 home runs in 31 games and helped his team to the state championship in 1996 in his junior year. He gained more attention as a result of his performances at the school.

He was drafted in the first round (22nd overall) by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1997 Major League Baseball draft and this made him change his plans of playing college baseball at the University of Georgia. He broke into the major leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2002, after the Orioles traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays for pitcher John Bale. At Toronto, Werth began transitioning from catcher to the outfield.

After two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Werth was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Jason Frasor on March 29, 2004. He got a wrist injury during spring training in March 2005 but he managed to continue playing as he completed the season with 102 games, hitting .234 with seven home runs. Months later, he underwent surgery on his injured wrist which took time to heal and made him miss the whole 2006 season.

He signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on December 19, 2006. It was worth $850,000. In June 2007, he suffered another wrist injury but recovered soon enough. He played well for the Phillies and on October 29, 2008, the team won their second World Series title. After the 2008 season, Werth was eligible for arbitration but despite that, he signed a two-year contract with the Phillies worth $10 million on January 21, 2009.

On December 5, 2010, Werth signed the 14th richest contract in baseball history, a seven-year contract with the Washington Nationals worth $126 million. He was introduced to the media on December 15, 2010 with his number 28 jersey and on August 11, 2013, he collected his 1,000th career hit.

He played for the Washington Nationals til he signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners on March 27, 2018. He then announced his retirement n June 27, 2018 and his name was added to the Ring of Honor at Nats Park on September 8, 2018.
