Todd Gurley and J.B. Smoove bond over Carolina barbecue
Adopted From: 247sports.com
Published: Jan 29, 2019
Todd Gurley was one of many Los Angeles Rams players to meet with the media during Super Bowl opening night on Monday evening in Atlanta, Georgia. While most of the reporters’ questions had to do with Gurley’s health and his potential production against the Patriots on Sunday, he did get to share a hilarious moment with comedian J.B. Smoove as the two bonded over their favorite Carolina barbecue.
Gurley grew up in Tarboro, North Carolina, while the Curb Your Enthusiasm actor grew up less than an hour to the west in Plymouth, North Carolina.
Gurley stated emphatically prior to the team leaving for Atlanta that his knee was back to 100 percent, despite the fact that he only touched the ball five times in the NFC Championship game against New Orleans.
“If there was an issue on my knee, it would be on the injury report. Come on now. I’m at practice. I’m playing,” Gurley said.
“I’ve got one more game left. I don’t care what nobody’s talking about,” he added. “Y’all can call me hurt. Y’all can call me whatever, but we’re going to the Super Bowl. What do y’all not understand? It’s not about me. This sport has never been about me. It’s never been about one player. Todd’s only going to be with the Rams so much longer. It’s going to be another dude that comes in just like me. This whole game is bigger than me. It’s not just about me. Why is Todd not getting the ball? Why is that? Because there’s only one football and there’s 11 guys. Only one guy can touch the ball each time. It’s way bigger than me.”
Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters shortly after the 26-23 overtime win over the Saints that Gurley was fully healed from the knee injury he suffered against the Eagles in Week 15 that kept him out of action for the final two weeks of the season.
“To start, Todd (Gurley) is healthy and he’s feeling good,” McVay said. “He sure looked pretty healthy on that touchdown run where he ran through guys and demonstrated some explosion and what we know about him. I just think, really more than anything, I’ve got to get him more opportunities.”
He then echoed that sentiment during Opening Night, stating once again that Gurley would get more carries against the Patriots.
“I’ve got to do a much better job for Todd to get him opportunities to get going,” McVay said. “Love the way he responded, though. Fully expect him to be the Todd Gurley that we all know and he’s going to be a big part of this game.”
Super Bowl LIII takes place on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
The 2018 NFL season has ended and we’re now moving forward to next season. The East-West Shrine Game is complete. Reese’s Senior Bowl practices have concluded and invitations have been sent to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis next month.
After the NFL Combine, college institutions will host Pro Days for their players to make one lasting impression in front of talent evaluators. NFL teams each have 30 visits where they bring prospects to team headquarters in order have any remaining questions answered.
