Joe Brown (Joseph Roger Brown) is an English rock and roll musician and guitarist born on 13th May 1941 in Swarby, Lincolnshire, England. He has been described by the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums, as a “chirpy Cockney”.In the 2009 Birthday Honours for services to music, he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Joe Brown (Joseph Roger Brown) is an English rock and roll musician and guitarist born on 13th May 1941 in Swarby, Lincolnshire, England. He has been described by the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums, as a “chirpy Cockney”.In the 2009 Birthday Honours for services to music, he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

In the late 1950’s he was a stage and television performer. He made six films, presented specialist radio series for BBC Radio 2, appeared on the West End stage alongside Dame Anna Neagle. He is highly regarded as a “musician’s musician” who “commands respect and admiration from a wide spectrum of artists” in the music business. He was one of the original artists managed by the early rock impresario Larry Parnes.

He has two children, from his first marriage to Vicki Brown, a daughter Sam Brown and son Pete Brown. Their daughter Sam Brown is a musician multi-instrumentalist, arranger and record producer. She plays Ukelele and was a blue-eyed soul and jazz singer.

His son Pete Brown is a record producer who produced all but one of Brown’s nine most recent albums and also tours with him.

Joe Brown Career

Joe formed ‘The Spacemen skiffle’ group in 1956 until the skiffle movement faded towards the end of the 1950s. He was spotted by Jack Good, a television producer, in 1958 who hired him as lead guitarist in the orchestra of his new TV series, Boy Meets Girls. During this time he was a backup musician for a number of U.S musicians such as Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran on their UK tours.

In 1960 Brown signed to Decca Records with Larry Parnes as his manager. He charted with the “Darktown Strutters’ Ball” in 1960 and had UK Top 10 hits on the Piccadilly label in 1962–63 with “A Picture of You”, “It Only Took A Minute” and “That’s What Love Will Do”.

In 1962 he was named ‘Top UK Vocal Personality’ by NME magazine.

In 1972 he formed ‘Brown’s Home Brew’ band which consisted of him, his wife Vicki Browns and Pete Oakman from the Bruvvers. The band played rock and roll, country and gospel music.

He also presented Square One, a daytime quiz show on Granada TV in the 1980s. He also hosted Show Me,a game show, aired on ITV for one series in 1987, and made a brief appearance as Dudley, a crooked club owner, in the 1986 film Mona Lisa, opposite Bob Hoskins.

Musicals and Films

During the 1960’s he featured in a number of musicals and films such as What a Crazy World, musical Charlie Girl in the West End between 1965 and 1968, and starred in the musical comedy film Three Hats for Lisa in 1965. He also made a cameo appearance as himself in the 1964 film The Beauty Jungle and presented the children’s television series, Joe & Co, on BBC Television, three series of The Joe Brown Show for ITV.

Joe Brown Concert for George

He performed at the ‘Concert for George’ which was a memorial event held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 29th November 2002 as a memorial to George Harrison on the first anniversary of his death.

The event was organized by George’s wife Olivia and their son Dhani. The proceedings from the event went to the Material World Charitable Foundation, an organization founded by George.

George was the best man at Brown’s second wedding in 2000 and Brown had appeared on his two songs on Harrison’s album Gone Troppo, and also was featured on a track on Harrison’s last album, Brainwashed.
