The group was rampant in Wisconsin and were behind 28 power failures and 20 other service interruptions at various power plants. Joseph Konopka Arrest

He was arrested in 2002 at the age of 25 by the University of Illinois at Chicago police. This was a result of his trespassing in the underground tunnel system beneath the university’s east campus. In his possession was a small vial of white powder. Tests later showed that the powder was sodium cyanide. Subsequently, the investigation showed that he had stored potassium cyanide and sodium cyanide in an unused storeroom. The storeroom location was in the Chicago ‘L’ Blue Line subway. To gain access, he picked the locks on several doors in the tunnel and changed the locks. This was in a bid to access the rooms freely without interruption. He briefly associated with an urban exploration group in the Chicago area. This helped him get information on how to access the large network of unused tunnels and abandoned rooms in Chicago’s transit system. The cyanide found in his possession was stolen from a shuttered warehouse that was formerly owned by a water treatment company in the South side of Chicago.

Joseph Konopka Sentencing

He was sentenced to 13 years on the 12th of March in 2003. He was sentenced as a result of hiding cyanide in a Chicago subway tunnel. He said he didn’t have a really good reason for doing what he did when asked by presiding judge Wayne R. Andersen. His defense attorney, Matthew Madden, claimed Joseph was mentally unstable as a result of an abnormal maturation process. This was however overruled.

He was given a 21-year sentence in 2004. The sentence was handed to him by Judge Lynn S. Adelman. This was as a result of conspiring to knock out power lines, burn buildings and damage computers in Wisconsin. He was ordered to pay more than $435,000 in damages to various victims in addition to the sentence.

His earlier convictions of arson and vandalism were overturned. This was on the 1st of June 2005 by a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago. This was a result of him having a guilty verdict that was not withdrawn before his 21-year sentencing. He pleaded guilty again and was added seven years to his existing sentence.

He is currently serving his 20-year sentence at ADX Florence. He is scheduled for release on the 8th of September in 2019.
