Kate Bosworth Biography

Kate Bosworth (Catherine Ann Bosworth) is an American actress and model. She is best known for her role as a teenage surfer in the box-office hit Blue Crush (2002).

She attended Cohasset High School, in Cohasset, Massachusetts where she graduated in 2001. In the late 2000, Bosworth was accepted to Princeton University, but because of continual deferral of her attendance, her acceptance was later revoked.

Bosworth also had roles in independent films, playing Dawn Schiller in the true crime film Wonderland (2003), and Sandra Dee in the Bobby Darin biographical drama Beyond the Sea (2004).

She played a role as Lois Lane in Superman Returns (2006), and had roles in 21 (2008), Straw Dogs (2011) and Still Alice (2014). In 2016, Bosworth starred in the horror film Before I Wake.

She developed an interest in competitive horse racing at a young age, and by the age of fourteen, she was a champion equestrian.

Her first film role came after an open casting call in New York for the supporting part of Judith in the 1998 film, The Horse Whisperer. The film’s producers needed someone who was already an experienced horse rider, leading to her successful audition for the role. The film received positive reception from film critics.

In 2000, Bosworth starred in the television series drama Young Americans, in which she played Bella Banks. The series, however, was canceled. In the same year, she had a small part in the film Remember the Titans.

In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles in hopes of obtaining easier access to auditions and better film parts.

Bosworth’s breakthrough in her career came in the 2002 surfing movie Blue Crush, which she prepared for by working out with two separate trainers seven hours a day for months in order to add fifteen pounds of muscle to her frame.

Peter Travers wrote in his review about the film, Rolling Stone’s: “Bosworth is a star in the making, but even she can’t outshine the surfing footage, which is flat-out spectacular.” The film received positive reviews and grossed $40 million at the United States box office.

Bosworth then got a lead role in low-budget Wonderland (2003) opposite Val Kilmer. She played the teenage girlfriend of porn star John Holmes.

In 2004, Bosworth played the lead role in romantic comedy Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, opposite Topher Grace. The film was critically and financially unsuccessful. In the same year, she depicted actress Sandra Dee in Beyond the Sea.

In 2005, Bosworth portrayed Chali, a Hare Krishna, in the film adaptation of Myla Goldberg’s novel Bee Season, about a dysfunctional Jewish family.

Bosworth has appeared in several Revlon ads and ranked as number 60 in FHM’s “100 Sexiest Women in the World 2005” list. For two years running, she has placed on the Maxim Hot 100 List – number 38 in 2005 and number 8 in 2006.

She was cast as reporter Lois Lane in Bryan Singer’s superhero film Superman Returns (2006). She then starred along with her Beyond the Sea co-star Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, as well as newcomer Brandon Routh as Superman.

She starred as Louise in the psychological drama called The Girl in the Park with Sigourney Weaver, Keri Russell and Alessandro Nivola, written and directed by Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn in his directorial debut.

In 2011, she contracted to sing the television jingle for Cotton Incorporated’s “Fabric of My Life” advertisement. On December 4, 2012, Topshop revealed that Bosworth was the “secret” woman in the new Topshop Christmas Adverts.

Bosworth designed a jewelry line with friend and celebrity stylist Cher Coulter called JewelMint, which launched in October 2010. JewelMint, the first vertical of MySpace co-founder Josh Berman and Diego Berdakin’s social commerce company, BeachMint, has designs by Coulter and Bosworth.

Between 2011 and 2014, Bosworth released ten films, moving away from the big-budget Superman franchise into lower-budget film roles like Still Alice with Julianne Moore.

In 2013, she was cast in the horror film Before I Wake. The film was directed by Mike Flanagan and was released on Netflix in 2017.

In 2016, she was cast in the post-apocalyptic horror film The Domestics which was released on June 28, 2018.

In September 2018, it was announced that Bosworth was cast in the main role of KC on the Netflix science-fiction series The I-Land. In the same year, she was cast in the sci-fi thriller Genesis.

Bosworth is a member of Soka Gakkai International, an organization of Mahayana Buddhism and Nichiren Buddhism.

Interviewer: What drew you to this project?
Kate Bosworth: SS-GB is unique. It is entertaining, but it’s also riveting. The sense of “what if this had happened? what would you have done?” is gripping. We know the history; we know that type of tragedy, but what if history had taken a slight turn?

Interviewer: Can you please talk us through your character, Barbara?
Kate Bosworth: I play Barbara Barga, an American journalist who works for the New York Times. It is 1941, and the British have lost the Battle of Britain. The Nazis have taken over most of England, and Barbara has been sent over by the paper to cover the story. It’s a little bit ambiguous as to what side of the line she stands. This project is mysterious in that we are left wondering what every character’s motivation is exactly. That mystery means she’s a little bit of a femme fatale from the 1940s. She’s been a really interesting, enjoyable character to play.

Interviewer: What attracted you to the character?
Kate Bosworth: I’ve always wanted to play a character from the 1940s. The look was very appealing to me. The physicality, the wardrobe, the hair and the make-up – that’s always been very attractive to me.

Interviewer: How did you go about your research for Barbara?
Kate Bosworth: She’s essentially like a leading lady from the 1940s. So I watched a lot of those films starring people like Lauren Bacall. I wanted to be inspired by that, but I didn’t want to do a caricature of the time. What is wonderful about having those leading ladies’ performances is we can watch and learn from them. But I also wanted her to be rooted in a deep sense of humanity and modernism that was important to the piece as well.

Interviewer: Were you also taken by the script?
Kate Bosworth: Definitely. I read a lot of novels, and the way the script read was very novelistic. I appreciated that. For me, it always starts with the words. So if the words grab me, as this did, then I’m immediately in. The writers have done an incredible job constructing this miniseries. If as a reader I’m intrigued by the script and am enjoying and questioning it, that translates to the audience.

Interviewer: Were you intrigued by the “alternate history”, too?
Kate Bosworth: Yes. I’m drawn to pieces that are rooted in history and those “what if?” scenarios. Those are interesting to people because it does feel like something one can imagine happening. We have this tragic history of the Second World War. So the idea of “what if the Nazis had won and infiltrated London? what would that have been like?” is fascinating. Whenever you have scenarios like this that are rooted in reality, it’s intriguing to people and terrifying as well. I liken it to a bullet whizzing by. You think, “how would that have played out?”

Interviewer: What is Barbara’s relationship with Archer?
Kate Bosworth: Barbara finds Archer very interesting. Archer first meets her when he sits at her cafe table without her knowing. Barbara is intrigued by that. Who is this person who has joined her at her table? What is his role in her life? And what is his role in this whole circumstance? There is an attraction there, certainly, and also a question mark. He’s curious about her role as well.

Interviewer: How did you find it acting opposite Sam Riley?
Kate Bosworth: It’s been a delight. I’ve always been a fan of his work since I saw him in Control many years ago, and I have wanted to work with him for some time. Sam is such a sweet, hardworking, wonderful person and actor. I love being in scenes with him. It’s one of those relationships where it has been effortless in creating the characters’ dynamic.
