On Beauty: Lily-Rose Depp

On working with Chanel

My first memories of Chanel are really actually quite family-orientated. Digging around in my mum’s closet. You know, Chanel is really the first thing that comes to mind when I think of fashion because I would try on all of her dresses and shoes – even though I was in diapers at the time! There’s actually a picture of me in a diaper wearing Chanel pumps. And same with the fragrances. My mum and my grandmother always wore Chanel fragrances, No.5 in particular, so that scent is really nostalgic as well. Working with Karl is amazing too. I met him for the first time when I was eight. He’s somebody that I not only admire and respect so much for his work and his insane creativity and genius, he’s also such a kind and intelligent person that I feel so lucky to know and to work with.

On beauty advice from her mother

It’s all the very basic stuff really, like the importance of washing your skin, taking care of your face when you’re wearing make-up… She is very natural, so she’d steer me in that direction. It’s funny, because I wanted to be wearing make-up even when I was far too little to be wearing it, especially to school. But the first time that my mum gave me make-up that I was allowed to wear – I must have been 12 or 13, but I still have it – it was a little orange Chanel make-up bag with all these Chanel products in it. It was very special, it was my favourite birthday present. And it’s also kind of symbolic, it’s like the turning of a page, becoming a young lady.

On skincare

I never go to sleep wearing make-up, I think that’s very important. And I just make sure my skin is clean and moisturised. I’m kind of simple when it comes to skincare. I think it’s about listening to your skin and changing it up and, you know, making sure that you’re doing what works for you. And I love the Chanel Le Lift eye masks. They make me feel really fab if I wear them on the plane. I put them in the fridge because when they’re cold they really de-puff. I’ll use them in the morning before an event.

On everyday make-up

For everyday, if I have a pimple or something I’ll do a little bit of concealer. Then a little bit of blush – the Chanel Joues Contraste blush smells so nostalgic for me because my mum would always put it on in the car. She’d put a bit on her eyelids as well and I do that now: cheeks, eyelids and the bridge of my nose. And I’ll do some lip pencil and maybe a little liner on the inside of the eyes. It’s those kinds of things that probably nobody else would notice, but you notice about yourself. My generation is the YouTube tutorial generation – I definitely grew up watching YouTube tutorials. I still love watching them actually. It’s weird because I watch them just for fun, but you do end up picking up some tips!

On dressing up

Make-up has always been the most fun part of dressing up for me, I like how it plays into your whole outfit and hair and everything. I definitely like to go for a bolder make-up look when I’m going out or doing events. I’m so lucky to work with such amazing make-up artists. I sometimes come in with an idea, but a lot of the time they’ll come up with something fun. I definitely like a strong eye, a bit of a cat-eye effect. It’s funny because my make-up artist right now, Christophe Danchaud, is my mum’s make-up artist as well, so I’ve known him since I was born. He’s been doing my make-up forever. He tells stories of when I was three or four and was like, put lip gloss on me!

On fragrance

Chanel No.5 L’Eau really is my scent. I feel naked if I don’t wear perfume so I always have a bottle in my bathroom. It has that nostalgic side too because it has notes of the original No.5, which reminds me so much of my family. But it’s a beautiful, fresh take on it, so that’s my signature scent, that’s what I smell like! It reminds me of the whole experience of working with Chanel over the years and the relationships I’ve developed so I’m really attached to the scent.

On hair

I don’t colour my hair but I love wearing wigs, just for fun. I haven’t worn one to an event or anything yet but me and my friends love putting them on and doing photoshoots and stuff like that. Luckily I have some friends who are fantastic photographers so the pictures are pretty good and fun memories to have. I have really thin hair so I don’t like to put too much product on it. And I’ll sleep with coconut oil in sometimes.

On fitness

I have been slacking lately but I actually do love working out. It makes me feel happy – it releases endorphins and makes you feel good. I like to walk places as much as I can and keep active. But in terms of workout classes and things like that, I get bored really easily so I definitely like the faster, dancey ones. It’s good to get your blood pumping. I think if you’re having a bad day, go and run around or walk around! I think it makes you feel better.

On pampering

I love an at-home spa. I love a bath and a mask, things like that. I think self care is definitely a part of self love. It’s important to pamper yourself and make yourself feel good. In my free time, honestly, I like to do as little as I possibly can. I’m very much a homebody so I like to stay in bed for as long as I can and I like to read a lot, see my friends. It’s fun to do nothing with the people you love.

On social media

I think it can be a really good thing and also a not so good thing. It’s so much easier for everyone to say what they feel. Navigating that is definitely something that this generation is the first to have to learn to deal with. It’s hard because the entire course of your life is somewhat recorded and there’s no handbook. Especially when you’re young and figuring out who you are. I mostly try to stay off it. I use Instagram but not Twitter or anything like that and personally I try not to let it have too big of a place in my life. But it can also be a really positive thing. It gives people a voice and a platform to speak their minds and stand up for things that they believe in.
