He was born in Greenville, South Carolina, the biological son of major-league baseball player Ron Musselman and Hershey Hendley (The daughter of former pro football player Dick Hendley). Musselman ultimately lost custody of his son and was barred from seeing him until his son turned 18. He attended Clemson University from 1998 to 2001, where he was a brother of Alpha Tau Omega. He was named first-team All-American in 2000 and 2001 and honorable mention All-American in 1999. He won three college tournaments and also won the South Carolina Amateur in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and the Sunnehanna Amateur in 2001.

After not being successful to earn his PGA tour Card, then in 2003, he had competed Gila River Classic at Wild Horse Pass Resort. He won the event and was in 17th in money earning list. This gave him the PGA tour card for 2004.In 2004 rookie year’s, disappointed game compelled him to sacrifice his tour card. He was forced to go back to Qualifying School but he soon recuperated his card. The year 2005 led a strong foundation for his career as he won FUNAI Classic at Walt Disney World Resort.
After the win, he was 30th on the money earning list. Although he couldn’t win any of the events in 2006, he made a good impression on the tour. He came to 31st in money earning list and was ranked amongst 50 at World Golf Rankings. In 2007 he didn’t register a victory in any of the game but his performance made people stunned. He was dropped to 53rd in money earning list as well as led United States team to win Presidents Cup of 2007. His bad performance again continued in 2008 as he was in top 10 only in two games among the entire game. He was noticeably dropped in money earning list from 53rd to 105th place. But he made a spectacular rebound in 2009 as he won U.S. Open championship after playing average in Buick International and in Quail Hollow Championship.

He became the first Clemson university student as well as first South Carolinian to win the major tourney in certified golf. He continued the thrust as he clutched win in PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
