Peter Alexander Interview
There’s no sibling rivalry here.
“Today” show correspondent Peter interviewed his sister, Becky, about the condition that’s causing her to lose both her vision and hearing in a segment that aired Monday.
“I’m so proud to share my sister’s story today,” Peter said at the top of the clip. “She’s my best friend.”
When Becky was 13, she was diagnosed with Usher syndrome type III, a genetic condition that causes hearing and vision loss.
“I was incredibly overwhelmed,” Becky, 35, recalled about getting the news. “It made me not want to live my life.”
But after coming to terms with her disease, she decided that she wasn’t going to let it sideline her.
“I felt like I need to do everything I can to make up for my loss,” she said. “It was like my way of fighting back.”
Becky keeps up her elite athlete fitness regimen — taking part in outdoor boot camps and mud runs, teaching spin classes and even doing push-ups in a hospital gown while awaiting surgery.
Brother Peter — who wept while interviewing his younger sis — calls her “a tornado of energy.”
Last year, Becky received a cochlear implant to help her hear better, but her vision continues to decline. Right now she sees as much as someone who was to look through a straw.
She chronicles her journey in a new book, “Not Fade Away: A Memoir of Senses of Lost and Found.”
The inspiring woman told her brother and Matt Lauer that she is actually happier today than she was before her diagnosis because she has learned to be grateful.
“We focus so much on all the things we don’t have rather what we do have,” she said.
