Teri Garr was born Teri Ann Garr, is a retired actress, dancer, and singer hailing from the US. Known mostly for her comedy roles throughout her career. Her illustrious acting career spans over four decades.


Teri Garr Career

Initially, she had small, minor roles in movies. In 1963 she made her debut as an extra in the movie ‘A Swingin’ Affair’. She appeared as a background dancer in several movies like ‘Viva Las Vegas’ in 1964. She appeared in commercials and had small roles in TV episodes.

Her first big role was in the psychological thriller, The Conversation in 1974. The film was a hit garnering three Oscar nominations. The film won the Golden Palm award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1974.

In 1974, she played a supporting role in the movie Young Frankenstein. The movie received two Oscar nominations.

In 1977, she appeared in a supporting role in the movie OH, God!. The same year she was cast in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The film was a sci-fi by Steven Spielberg.

In 1979, she appeared in the film Black Stallion. The film was based on a novel by Walter Farley.

Teri Garr Tootsie

In 1982, she appeared in the film Tootsie. Here she played Dustin Hoffman’s girlfriend. This is arguably her most well-known performance. The movie was nominated for ten Academy Awards and was the second highest-grossing film of that year. She was nominated for an Academy Award although she didn’t win. The reviews of the movie were mainly positive.

In 1984 she made an appearance in the TV film To Catch a King. In 1986 she appeared in the comedy miniseries Fresno.

She went on to appear in popular films such as Mr Mom in 1983, Miracles in 1986, Full Moon in Black Water in 1988.

Garr was featured guest on Star Trek in 1968.

She appeared in the 1992 movie Mom and Dad Save the World. The sci-fi was another of her signature roles.
In 1995 she played the lead role in the crime thriller Perfect Alibi. The film was based on the novel Where’s Mommy Now? by Majer Krich. The plot is of a husband who tries to murder his wife for her money.

In 1997 she appeared in the movie A Simple Wish. She was cast in the film Ghost World in 2001.

In 2007 Garr made her final appearance in a film with the movie Kabluey. The film had a number of stars including Scott Prendergast, Lisa Kudrow, and Christina Taylor.

She retired in 2011.

Born in the suburbs of Cleveland in Lakewood, Ohio. She is the daughter to Eddie Garr and Phyllis Lind Garr. She is of Irish-Austrian descent. Her father was an actor, comedian, and vaudeville performer. Her mother was a dancer, wardrobe mistress, a Rockette, and a model. She has two older brothers Edward Garr Jr. and Phillip Garr.

Her early life was spent in Cleveland before the family briefly moved to New Jersey. Ultimately they settled in Los Angeles, California.

Her father passed on when she was 11 and her mom was left in charge of the family. Cause of death was a heart attack. During her youth she trained in ballet, having an interest in dance.

She graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1962. Teri attended California State University. She dropped out after two years to pursue acting. Garr relocated to New York City. Here she studied at the Actors Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

October 2002 was when Teri announced publicly that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis(Ms). The disease damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. She has said in interviews that she started noticing the symptoms while filming Tootsie. Teri went on to be a National Ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She is also National Ambassador for the National Chair for the Society’s Women Against MS. She was honoured as the society’s Ambassador of the year in November 2005.

Garr suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm that left her in a coma in December 2006. She regained her speech and motor skills after therapy sessions.
